dixie-getting-used-to-her-new-home

Dixie getting used to her new home.

Delta and Dixie flew back from South Carolina Beach and were solemnly greeted by all of Oh Valley’s Fancifulls. They had both been dearly missed.

The Celebration of Life ceremony that was held for her Aunt Myrtle in South Carolina Beach had been beautiful. Attended by many of Aunt Myrtle’s neighbours and friends, though no other relatives as Dixie was Aunt Myrtle’s only living relative.

Dixie was relieved that Delta had been with her. Delta and Dixie crossed wing-tips through the ceremony as dragonflies don’t have hands to hold. Daphne and Dinah, Dixie’s sorority sisters, crossed wing-tips close at their side.

Daphne has made long flight  back to Oh Valley with Dixie and Delta. Dinah couldn’t take time off work just then but said she’d drop in for a whirlwind visit while on hiatus between films. Yes,  Oh Valley was added to her itinerary for later in the summer.

Dixie is sometimes sad when she thinks of her aunt dying. She knows she has the support of her friends here and that they are ready to listen and give assistance if asked. What she wishes is for everyone to act the same as they did before she left to attend her aunt’s funeral.

She wants her summer fun to return. She doesn’t want to think too much about Aunt Myrtle and become sad. She remembers the good times … like helping to make strawberry preserves… and rocking for hours on the porch swing while her aunt told her stories of her own childhood. Even learning how to sew was finally a fond memory. Learning wasn’t very fun at first but Aunt Myrtle said she should keep practicing. She persisted and was really proud of the bonnet she completed for herself – especially the  hand-embroidered blue flowers on its brim that her aunt taught her to stitch. From then on, she enjoyed sewing and embroidery. Yes, she has many good memories. Those are the memories she will keep.

Good memories can sometimes make you sad when you know the person in those memories has died. Dixie’s aunt told her, while on that very same porch swing, that memories are the threads that keep you connected to your loved ones, even when they are not physically with you any longer. The memories will keep your loved ones alive in your heart.

Even Darby is different around Dixie. He’s on his best behavior and not teasing her as he normally would do. Dixie knows he’s being respectful of her and her loss but she finds his behavior too weird. She’s used to bantering back and forth with him. It was fun.  It put some spark in her life. She wishes he would behave towards her like he did before her Aunt died. She is not sure what to say or do to let him know how she feels. She thinks she’ll have to talk with him, to tell him she’d rather they get back to normal.

Oh Valley has become Dixie’s permanent home. She was happy spending summer vacations here. Winter will be a huge change for her.  She will have to get used to the colder climate. She has always wondered what snow feels like. She has never touched it or played in it. Snow is something she has only ever seen in pictures. Now she’ll find out about it first hand. Or… maybe not! Looking out at it from her window inside Oh Valley’s Magical Insect Inn might be close enough. She has lots of time to decide. It’s only summer, after all.

Daphne likes Oh Valley and is thinking about taking up permanent residence. She has  had word from Dinah that she’s on her way up to see what she’s missing out on. Dinah thinks that Oh Valley must be a very special place. Everyone who visits never seems to want to leave.

Here’s hoping your day is a happy one.

Sue, Axie, and The Fancifulls of Oh Valley

Although I’ve missed blogging about the goings-on of my Fancifulls, I have been very busy. I’m on track to bring 1000 dragonflies to Maxville, Ontario, CANADA at the Glengarry Highland Games next week – Friday August 2nd and Saturday August 3rd, 2019. The photos above show my progress. I started with flat, unmarked copper foil for all the pieces above; bodies and wings. Dragonflies are all personally hand-crafted without the use of any electricity – power tools. My fingers hurt. 😉

I will be bringing Darby, Delta and Dixie whom you’ve met. You’ll be able to meet Dirk too. He dropped by Oh Valley’s Insect Inn last week and has become fast chums with Darby. Dirk is very “Crafty” and loves to dart around wreaths and other do-it-yourself projects. I think he has already found a permanent room at the inn and is making himself at home. Dirk – named for the upcoming games,  a Scottish dagger -doesn’t appear to be leaving Oh Valley anytime soon.

Dexter is sticking around too and would like to be at the show, though I’m not so sure he deserves to meet all you fine people. He and Darby got into a bit of mischief last night and a witness, Dirk, confirmed that Dexter was the instigator. Now, Dex has to be on his best behaviour or he’ll be stuck at home while we enjoy the festivities of the Glengarry Highland Games. If you meet him there, it will be that he has been very good dragonfly… for the week anyway. 🙂

I have some sad news to relay. Dixie’s Aunt Myrtle passed away this week and Dixie has been home in South Carolina Beach to pay her last respects. Aunt Myrtle was Dixie’s only living relative. As a dear friend, Delta has flown south with Dixie. She will stay with her and help support her through this sad time. I received word only last night, during the kerfuffle between Dexter and Darby, that Delta and Dixie should be back next week and that they may be bringing a couple of Dixie’s sorority sisters, Dinah and Daphne, with them. They will definitely come up for a visit later this summer if they are not able to visit Oh Valley next week.

If you show up on Sunday, you unfortunately will have missed out on the largest Highland Games Competition in all of North America. I’m a 5th generation Scots and am so looking forward to being there and meeting everyone. You included!

Have a fantastic week!

DELTA ready for our walk to the lily pond

DELTA ready for our walk to the “Lily Pond”

Today we’ve decided to go on an outing to a local lily pond. Lunches are packed for Axie and I. Darby, Delta, Dixie, and Dex will find plenty on offer while in flight to and around the pond. This was Darby’s suggestion. He spotted this particular “pond” while flying back from his visit with Dash and Driscoll. He says he would have dropped in for a snack then, if he was sure he would make it back home before dark. (Shhhh… Darby is afraid of the dark. He doesn’t want anyone to know.)

I will pack extra sunscreen and repellent for the pesky two-winged insects. Though, as my friends are dragonflies, I may only us the sunscreen. The Fancifulls will take care of many biting flies that come too close. Did you know that dragonflies aren’t really flies at all? They have 6 legs, as do black flies, biting midges (no-see-ums), sand flies and mosquitoes. Those flies belong to the zoological order Diptera. Dragonflies, however, have four prominent wings which puts them in a different zoological order – Odonata, an order shared with one other group -Damselflies. With only two zoological groups in the order, you can be forgiven for believing there would be few species. However, there are over 5000 distinct species of Dragonflies alone in this order. Dragonflies have been around for over 250 million years!  Maybe this is why they can innocently lunch-munch on 30 to 100 of the newer order of two-winged fliers every day. Dragonflies are 100% carnivorous.

I’m still trying to determine if Dragonflies have teeth. Smithsonian Magazine states that they do while other relevant resources state otherwise. ‘Odon’ is old Greek for tooth so my limited research will continue. What I can state, unequivocally, is that Dixie does have teeth, those of her attached, copper alligator clip.

Dragonflies have a very strong mandible jaw, and if captured, may clamp down on their perceived enemy’s skin, to aid in their escape. This may feel like a bite. Update June 9, 2020 –  Dragonflies technically have teeth. However, it is their strong mandible jaw clamping down that humans feel when a dragonfly is defending itself.

I’ll include pictures of our trip to the lily pond in a future blog post. For now, Axie says it’s time to start his real day which means a real walk, not this one I imagined at 4am. 🙂

Sue and the Axe-Man and all the Fancifulls of Oh Valley

Yesterday was laundry day. In my hurry to attend more important matters, that being my barking dog, Axie, I had forgotten to clean out my pockets.

While shaking my clean, wet clothes out before hanging to dry, (I do not use my electric dryer), I found Dixie and Delta in a pocket of my GT Boutique, washable “linen-like,” pants. They looked a little frazzled to say the least.

I’m pleased and proud to report that after a few seconds of recovery stretches, they were able to spread their wings and be back to their normal selves. Even Delta’s balance on her hanger hook was perfect. The girls got a bit of their glitter back as well. Dixie, however, was extremely unimpressed by the whole ordeal and wanted to fly straight back to South Carolina Beach after that treatment. Thankfully, Delta was able to talk her out of it while I went on another mosquito gathering mission.

Both girls are now full and content. They are currently comparing wingspans to see who has the widest. Needless to say I kept Darby out of the room through this whole ordeal. I know Darby. He would have never stopped laughing at their distress. Boys! I know however, if I hadn’t been there, he would have done all he could to help his friends… between laughs.

Moral of the story: Don’t forget to clean your pockets out before placing your laundry in the washer. If you do forget, know that Hazy Dayz Dragonflies will fare far better than that pesky tissue that shreds itself and ends up on everything. Why does that only ever happen in the darks load?

Have a great week. Dixie and Delta say that they hope you don’t get too frazzled even if you seem to be spinning in circles.

Sue

Good Morning!

Life in Oh Valley has been quite hectic. No one seems to sleep very much. Insects seem to rise as soon as the sun shoos away the dampness. Lately, everyone has been leaving the Insect Inn at 5am, some days, sooner!. This morning, it is a bit chillier and some of our friends are still tucked under their leaves in the inn.

Darby is still pestering me for his own Facebook page. I’ve told him that as soon as I figure out how QuickBooks works, I will look into it. The way I’m going, it may be a long wait for Darby.

Dixie and Delta went for a jaunt yesterday. They came back all covered in red goop. When I asked what they had been up to, they said they’d been over to the neighbours farm, picking strawberries. Of course I was delighted and asked for their little baskets full of ripe red berries, thinking we’d be having strawberries and cream for Supper. Nope. They didn’t take their baskets. They only took their tummies. They ate so many strawberries they didn’t want to see a single one more. Note to self, visit Mr. Childace soon to be sure Dixie and Delta paid for their full tummies.

Dixie hadn’t had strawberries right from the vine before. Delta was right. They were so different from the ones Aunt Myrtle brought home from the green grocers. These ones tasted like juicy sunshine. She ate so many, she could hardly fly. They tasted so much better than mosquitoes. She was thinking about becoming a vegetarian, although all her friends in South Carolina Beach teased her when she said so. Everyone knows that dragonflies are carnivorous. Then Delta said that strawberries could only be picked fresh from the fields for about 2 weeks in Oh Valley. Dixie was back to plan A – mosquitoes.

Have an exciting day everyone. Go outside with your friends and discover your neighbourhood.

Life has returned to its normal pace with Darby back from “up the Valley.” I think frenetic would describe it best. Darby returned with his typical whirlwind pace, darting around as he regaled tales of his exploits with his old school buddies. Sometimes it’s very hard to keep up with Darby because his thoughts tend to race quicker than his body… and that’s very quick. As Dixie reminded me, Darby can be exhausting to listen to. With his return, Delta, Dixie and I were realizing this was one of the reasons we missed him so much. That’s our Darby and we’re glad he’s home. Do you know someone like Darby?

Darby met his friends, Dash and Driscoll, in a small town renowned for its Sticky Buns. They have an old-fashioned General Store with squeaky wood floors. It’s an amazing store. He bought a Sticky Bun and managed to get all gooey, like everyone when they eat one of these wonderful buns for the first time.

The three friends flew to the near-by Mighty Oh River and took a quick dip to get cleaned up. How did he get the sticky goo on his wings? Wow! They really ARE sticky. Dash and Driscoll showed Darby a really old stone bridge. It had 5 stone arches along its expanse and the dragonflies had a wonderful time flying in and around the arches as they cleaned up. It was wonderful to fly into the cool darkness under an arch after being in the hot sunshine above them seconds before. He’d never had so much fun taking a bath before. He could be happy staying here all day but Dash had other ideas. He wanted Darby to see a place much further up the valley.

Darby, Dash, and Driscoll

Dash was the quickest flyer in Darby’s class when they attended Drone On Dragonfly School. That alone made him “Top Student.” His real name is Drayton but his friends call him ‘Dash’ because he is so quick. Time has not slowed Dash down. Darby and Driscoll flew as fast as they could and managed to keep up and eventually came to an unusual place, that had rows and rows of green vehicles. Dash said that these were Army Tanks and he was signing up.

Darby didn’t know what he meant. Dash explained that he wanted to serve his country and was going to become a member of the Armed Forces. Darby still wasn’t sure what Dash was talking about. What did Dash mean, “Serving his country?” When Dash explained he was going to wear a uniform and fly high above the treetops keeping an eye out to be sure everyone was safe, that he could actually leave Oh Valley and fly to far off places to do this important work, Darby wondered if he might like to sign up too. It sounded glamorous but also dangerous. Dash must be very brave to want to leave Oh Valley and watch over strangers to ensure their safety. He’d better not rush into this decision as everyone tells him he’s apt to do.

He’d go home and think about it. He’d ask Delta and Dixie what they thought too. He knew the final decision had to be his alone but he needed advice.

Dash and Driscoll flew back with Darby as far as the town with the 5-Arch Stone Bridge. They knew of a wonderful Ice Cream Shop there and it was a very hot day and ice cream is perfect to eat on a hot day. They made one final stop in town to a shop that sells wonderful fudge. Of course, they needed another dip in Oh River to clean off all the ice cream drips and sugar. Darby had a wonderful time with his long lost buddies but it would be good to be home with Delta and Dixie at his Insect Inn.

After saying Good-bye, Darby raced as fast as his tired wings would carry him. He didn’t want to be out past dark. He didn’t usually fly at night and although he’d never let on to his friends, he was actually afraid of the dark. He began wondering if Dash would have to fly at night in the Armed Forces. He really needed to think this through.

He arrived back to the Insect Inn just as the sun was setting and found his friends waiting for him. He was so glad to be home.

He’s over my shoulder now showing me what picture he wants to use as his new Facebook photo. I keep telling him that he doesn’t have a Facebook Page. He keeps asking, “Why not?” I may have to look into that or Darby will never rest. For now I promised that I’d post his favourite picture on my Facebook page for him.

Have a great Hazy Day of Summer Everyone!
